There are numerous counseling approaches that are used to help overcome the results of being impacted by the unexpected. EMT or eye movement technique was originally used by a therapist and client in the counselor office but now is available for a person to use on his or her own. It is also called eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). The procedure invades a rapid back-and-forth movement of the eyes or a tapping of the fingers. It has been used to reduce emotional stress from the past as well as the present-day issues, and redirects thinking as well as traumatic memories to be more positive and rational. This involves using more of the prefrontal part of the brain. One of the resources that will give you more information about this is Do It Yourself Eye Movement Technique for Emotional Healing by Fred Freiberg (New Harbinger Publishers, 2001). Another counseling approach that is quite effective is Thought Field Therapy (TFT). This can be used for problems identified previously under EMT. This has applications for a number of the traumatic stress responses. It appears to be a fast way of reducing stress that has lasting results. This approach uses a tapping technique or certain treatment points on the body. This does not take an excessive amount of time. I have seen this used in a class setting as well as a therapy situation, and the results were very positive. This approach is used to deal with memories and it also has an impact on intense emotions, especially fear. The tapping occurs on sites on the body where acupuncture points are used. Roger Callahan has done most of the work in this area, and his resource is Stop the Nightmares of Trauma by Roger J. Callahan and Joanne Callahan. Each of these approaches are worth pursuing.
Writing about painful experiences can be very helpful. Writing can help boost your immune system and keep your body healthy. Writing, like any form of expression, can be a healing activity. Writing about troubling experiences and the troubling aspects of your relationships helps you see them more clearly and gives you a sense of mastery over your experiences. Once you put something down on paper, you may make connections you were not previously aware of and you may get in touch with feelings you havenât experienced before.
